Goodbye, Wet Seal! Hello, Individuality?

On Feburary 27th Wet Seal closed it's doors forever both literally and virtually; hopefully leaving the reeking stench of memories left by middle-school outfits like Justin Bieber graphic tees with florescent colored denim. After a long-time rivalry with Charlotte Russe and Forever21, Wet Seal declared defeat after several decades of fashion influence. And, while I know I'll be missing the $5 style steals, I am happy to see another tween-trend driven store disappear.

It was once said by the great Venezuelan-American designer Carolina Herrera, "I don't like trends. They tend to make everyone look the same". Carol hit the nail on the head with this one; chain fashion stores like Wet Seal, Charlotte Russe, and Forever21 supply "in-trend" clothes for cheap. While I'm all about deals, these companies are pretty much making millions from cloning your little sister and her friends. It is because of the dastardly effect of follow-the-leader fashion that most people tend to buy things they saw on someone else, creating a never-ending cycle of copycats.

While trends are fun to incorporate into your own unique wardrobe, we style savers must remember that trends are temporary. Here's my advice on how to avoid catching Jenny from Theta Apple Pie in the same threads you've got on.

1. Less is More

The age-old saying totally applies here. While whipping-up your look of the day, you must fight the temptation to finish off every outfit with a choker and thigh high boots. My advice? Try to stick to one "trendy" item per outfit, unless you'd like to look back on your selfies with the same remorse your mom has when seeing her 80's curls. This gorgeous get-up worn by Kourtney Kardashian is a perfect example of how to incorporate a trend into a personalized look. The double choker is a dainty and subtle pop of currency, keeping her classic denim and nude tank combo updated.

2. Be YOU

It's easy to blend-in with the cool-kid trends when you're dealing with fashion and dressing alike. Once most of the campus has the same lattice front top, it's up to you how you style it. Throw on a cozy cardigan and some booties; use your own personal all-time favorite pieces to style yourself differently than the pack and stay unique.

It's easily possible to drown yourself in trends in this day in age. But don't worry, diva! You can assemble your outfit to highlight all of YOUR best assets... and I won't tell anyone if your choker necklace was from the closing sale at Wet Seal.
