Met Gala Glam

Oh, the Met Gala. The ulitmate ode to two of my favorite things in the universe: Marketing and Fashion. If you aren't still in the glamour daze of fashion's best, you're totally missing out. For those who may be new to the fashion scene; the Met Gala is the ultimate testamate to designers and branding alike; where our most sought-after and photo worthy celebs are endorsed to attend in an effort to attract attention towards which designer's look they're wearing. The goal of this sophisticated gathering is to raise money towards the Costume Institute; at a hefty $30,000 a ticket and around $127,000 a table. This year's event paid hommage to one of the 21st century's most influencial designers, 74-year-old Rei Kawakubo and her Japanese fashion label Comme des Garçons. (Fun Fact: Comme des Garçons translates from French to "like some boys" in English.) As high fashioned as her looks may seem, you've worn her designs too if you've got a shirt from PacSun or Zumiez with a red heart and googily eyes logo. She remains the second designer alive to be given her own solo show at the Met. This year's exhibition was "Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between". As the title suggests, guests are encouraged to follow suit by wearing avant garde designs; which is exactly where phenominal designers like Donatella Versace, Calvin Klein, Michael Kors, Alexander Wang, Elle Saab, and of course, the timeless Rei Kawakubo fit in to serve looks for some cause-worthy publicity.

This year, attendees like Nicki Minaj, a few from the Kardashian/Jenner clan, Christie Teigen, Selena Gomez featuring her beau, the Weeknd, his ex Bella Hadid, Katy Perry and Zendaya stole spotlight in looks that ranged from copy-cat classic, to tastefully daring, and even just plain weird. Of course, Rihanna sparkled a little extra in a Comme des Garcons original design, a true testimate to the designer being honored and her work. How can you love fashion and not love Rihanna? Now that the Met Gala has come and gone, I'll be dreaming of which avant garde designer I'll need to contact about what I'm wearing next year. Any takers? ;)
